Vancouver has so much to offer and an accessible transit system

I recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting the beautiful city of Vancouver for a week. I have to say, as far as Canadian travel destinations go, Vancouver is certainly among my favourites, with the perfect blend of natural beauty and urban attractions.

You can get around with ease in the city by using Vancouver’s accessible transit system. Visitors can access plenty of unobstructed sidewalks, curb ramps, audible signals at pedestrian crossings, and accessible waiting and boarding areas.

Hoping to explore what nature has to offer? Make your way through the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver, situated in a West Coast Rainforest. In addition to the titular bridge, which is 450 feet long, you can get lost amidst the Douglas Fir trees and walk the cliffwalk. The Suspension Bridge, Treetops Adventure, and Cliffwalk are not wheelchair accessible. However, guests using wheelchairs or mobility aids receive complimentary admission and can enjoy accessible areas including the Story Centre, Kia’palano, shops, and restaurants.

Next, visit the city’s looming mountains, which can also be seen at a distance from most windows and viewpoints – Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, and Mount Seymour. Check out Stanley Park, a massive urban park spanning over 1,000 acres which also features the stunning Stanley Park Seawall and multiple natural beaches.

Vancouver offers plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy exploring fun neighborhoods and shopping – consider Granville Island, which features an impressively large indoor public market, as well as neighborhoods such as Yaletown and Gastown. All of these neighborhoods also feature plenty of restaurants, including those with patio seating to enjoy some breathtaking views.

During our visit, we stayed at the Hilton Vancouver Downtown. This modern, all-suite hotel is located right in the heart of downtown Vancouver, at 433 Robson Street — one of the city’s main shopping and entertainment corridors. Sitting just at the edge of Yaletown, this hotel is a very walkable home base for those hoping to make their way to BC Place & Rogers Arena, the Granville entertainment district, and the Vancouver waterfront.

We stayed in a spacious king one-bedroom suite, which also included a pull-out couch and views of both the water and the mountains. In the morning, we enjoyed breakfast at Hendricks Resto-Lounge in the hotel lobby, which includes made-to-order breakfasts as well as a full American buffet breakfast. The buffet includes several hot dishes including scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon and sausage, eggs benedict, and pancakes. Pastries, toast, bagels, and several cereal options were also available, as well as coffee, tea, and juice. Hendricks is also open for lunch and dinner, and has a dedicated happy hour menu.

We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather during our stay and were able to spend some time at the hotel’s outdoor pool and hot tub – a lovely space to unwind and relax in the sun. The pool is connected directly to the hotel’s fitness center and sauna for those who are interested.

The hotel has wheelchair-accessible rooms with grab bars, roll-in/accessible showers, and adequate turning space, elevators to all floors and accessible public areas (lobby, restaurant, restrooms), a step-free or ramped entrance with automatic doors, accessible parking (including designated spaces and drop-off area right at the entrance), and features like assistive listening devices.

Vancouver’s culinary scene is as diverse as its visitors. Although known for its outstanding sushi offerings, you can explore plenty of cozy brunch spots, romantic venues, and critically acclaimed restaurants highlighting fresh local ingredients. Fortunately, many of these spaces are thoughtfully designed to ensure accessibility and comfort.
